Anthony McKillop - Douneside House

After working during the school holidays as a hotel porter, Anthony knew that he wanted to pursue a career in hospitality. So, when he was offered an apprenticeship at Douneside House  in 2019, he jumped at the chance.

Here’s Anthony’s story:

“I was 16 when I started at Douneside. I took up the apprenticeship straight out of school, and when I first started, I was quiet and shy. But moving around the departments and working with so many different guests, I have come out of my shell and am really enjoying myself. I never thought I could be this confident.

The masterclasses have been one of the best things, and even with Covid, they were taken online, so I didn’t miss out. I have also had the opportunity to present back to the next year’s apprenticeship intake. It made me realise how far I have come.

Hospitality Apprenticeship North East gives you a level of freedom in how you work through your apprenticeship, which has enhanced the whole experience. You get to do more of the areas you are interested in and supported to get the best out of them.

I’m currently working on the accounts side, front of house, housekeeping, and the health club. I love the variety, and it has made me more adaptable to different roles and departments.

The whole learning and training experience is also very inclusive and can be adapted to work with your individual needs, interests, learning styles, and expectations.

I would most definitely recommend the Hospitality Apprenticeship North East apprenticeship to anyone. It was probably the best decision I have made as I have had the chance to understand how the hospitality industry works and given the time to learn and build up my skills and knowledge. I have thoroughly enjoyed the experience.”
