Hannah Kerridge - Jurys Inn Aberdeen Airport

Fresh out of university, Hannah, 26, had worked in a hotel bar for a year while deciding what she wanted to do next. A chance phone call from her previous manager set her on the path to an apprenticeship at Jurys Inn Aberdeen Airport and a whole new career in hospitality.

Here’s Hannah’s story:

“I was 24 and had been wanting to get back into hospitality for a while but was unsure how. When I heard about the apprenticeship at Jury’s Inn, it seemed the right choice to make. In fact, in many ways, the apprenticeship chose me as I thought I was too old. But that was not the case.

“I started at Jury’s Inn Aberdeen Airport in 2019 and finished my apprenticeship last August. I am currently food and beverage supervisor and step in as duty manager when needed.

“During my apprenticeship, I made sure I kept an open mind on each of the rotations to get the most out of each one. I think the three-four months you get in each department is essential, as it means by the end of the apprenticeship you can be an all-rounder.

“What also stood out for me were all the extras you got as you trained. Covid meant I did some of the courses online, but I have now got my WSET wine Level 1, and I also did a cocktail masterclass. One of my best experiences was a wine class at The Fife Arms with a sommelier from London; it was so informative and enjoyable.

“My confidence has also massively grown during my time at Jury’s, and professionally I am much better at my job. Every day is different, and I can now turn my hand to other areas, whether reception, accounts, or events.

“My apprenticeship has really opened my eyes to all the varied aspects of hospitality. It is hard work, but I genuinely enjoy going in each day, I work with a great team, and it is fun and rewarding.

“Taking up my apprenticeship at Jurys Inn has been the best decision I have ever made, so if you are thinking of a career in hospitality, please just do it!”
